Becoming more Eco conscious takes a bit of organization. As busy moms we are short on time already so I have put together this list of items for you so you don’t have to think about what you need. I did not include diapers, wipes, extra change of clothes etc in this list because they are essential and I assume you know you’ll also need them.
I cloth diaper so my diapering section will look very different to someone who uses disposables. So, before you tell me I’ve forgotten those items I left them out on purpose.
I have a toddler in diapers so I still use a diaper bag but for those that don’t use whatever bag you use to lug all your child’s processions in, its most likely always with you.
The Basics | All you need to get started
Your Favourite Bag
This is all personal preference. We love having a backpack diaper bag because the off the shoulder ones really hurt our backs. This Skip Hop one is versatile, gender neutral and lightweight.
We have found a perfect balance with this bag and can fit everything we need into it. We use it so much that the handle broke, as you can see in the pic, but that was our fault because we stuffed too much unnecessary stuff into it.
When choosing a bag keep in mind what you need to pack inside it and don’t overstuff it.
Travel Mug
With kids around I always buy spill proof, leak proof and one I can drink from with one hand.
I personally love Contigo brand because it is the first brand that has hit everything in my checklist.
I suggest going to a few stores to physically check out what you prefer. You want it to be functional and good looking enough for your taste to bring it with you everyday.
Water Bottle
I live in a place where the tap water is drinkable. It honestly makes no sense why people buy bottled water where I am when we can get water for free. I understand some medicals conditions require more sterilization and all that but exclude these situations in my statement
Most places have water fountains, water bottle refill stations or you can just ask someone if you’re in an establishment your at if you’re really stuck. I always fill mine before leaving the house and refill as necessary.
My checklist is the same as the travel mugs and I suggest going in store to test them out.
I carry one for myself and one for Mia.
Cutlery
This one is an item not many would think of carrying with them. I love our To Go Ware set and we have 2. I have it in my bag but don’t always use it, when I do I put this in the sink to be washed and put my second set in my bag.
This particular set comes with a spoon, fork, chopsticks and a knife. The knife is not very sharp and if Mia got a hold of it it wouldn’t cut her. Ive never wished I had a sharper knife on me when Im out so this little set works great.
A set from your regular dishes works just as well and will do the trick.
Straws
Reusable straws come in many forms. Stainless steel, bamboo, silicone, glass etc.
I typically use a metal straw and I make sure to add one to the little baggy with my utensils in it. Sometimes I’ll need to take out the chopsticks to make sure the straw will fit.
Straws are very personal and I would suggest trying different ones out.
Shopping Bags
I always have at least one of these on me. They fit perfectly in my diaper bag when I fold and roll them, see the video below for how I do it.
You can find these at most of your local stores or you can order some fancy ones.
If you are someone who enjoys making things you could even make one out of old tee shirts.
